The Wave Project, a local charity that provides surfing and mentoring to vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people, successfully crowdfunded their second project, Gone Surfing, with Crowdfunder.co.uk back in December. We caught up with them this morning at the opening of their Newquay Surf Unit to see how life after their campaign has been going.
After successfully crowdfunding The Wave Project Appeal in 2014 to fund their own branded van full of wetsuits and specially adapted surf equipment, the Wave Project returned with an even bigger vision to continue improving lives and empowering the community.
Looking for funding towards providing a permanent beachside premises that could both house equipment and stand as a safe and private place for their members and volunteers to use, the charity set their sites on a unit at Towan Promenade. However, like with any project, there can always be unexpected obstacles that require an attitude of adaptability and it was great to hear that despite initial location plans for the Newquay Surf Unit falling through, they were still able to see their ideas through to creation.
As a charity known for their creative and community spirit, it’s no surprise that new premises were soon found below Sea Spray Café on South Fistral beach, which provided the picturesque backdrop for this mornings opening event.
Becky Parry, Head of Projects at the Wave Project, chatted to us about her experience with Crowdfunder:
“We think that Crowdfunder is a great platform to raise funds for community projects. It’s a positive way to launch specific community campaigns with an effective outcome. We will definitely look to use Crowdfunder again for future projects.”
Crowdfunder.co.uk is proud to support projects that seek to improve lives and unite communities by approaching new solutions to solve important challenges, and we can’t wait to see what The Wave Project wants to crowdfund next!
We currently have money to give away to projects that focus on enhancing the lives of young people in certain areas around the country.
