Crowdfunding for sport – Cornish cricket fields a googly!

Cricket-lovers in Cornwall and organisers of the sport determined to increase participation and community support have launched an innovative county-wide fundraising initiative to boost the game and halt falling numbers of people enjoying it.

Cornwall Cricket CEO Sean Hooper and fundraising organisation Crowdfunder have teamed up to help create a sustainable future for cricket in Cornwall after figures show numbers dropped by 7% last year.

The Cornwall Cricket Campaign is being launched to assist, educate and enable clubs across Cornwall to create Crowdfunding projects which will be used to fund a wide variety of projects.

These could include raising money for cricket kits, to running cricket disability sessions, right through to funding young cricket athletes as they progress their careers in the sport and supporting women in cricket programmes.

Launching the campaign on the first day of the cricket season Sean Hooper said: “By launching the Cornwall cricket crowdfunding campaign we are trying to pull the cricket family together and make Cornwall cricket sustainable. We are going to enable clubs across the county to raise funds and engage their communities.

“We are pushing the boundaries on participation. It’s not only clubs, but women’s cricket, disability cricket, our youth development programme and the hundreds of volunteers that make cricket in our communities possible who will benefit from this mass co-operation.”

There are 72 cricket clubs in Cornwall and 10,000 people are actively involved in cricket or regularly participate in the game.

Guy Hayler, Partnerships Manager for Crowdfunder commented on the launch: “We are excited to be launching the Cornwall Cricket campaign on Crowdfunder. The Cornwall Cricket Board are pioneering in their field – using crowdfunding to create a sustainable future for the cricket sector across the region.

“We strongly believe that cricket clubs – and all sports clubs are at the very heart of UK communities, and crowdfunding is an incredible way to bring these communities together to become more financially sustainable and supported by the very people they serve.

“This campaign is just the start of crowdfunding for sport. We are already speaking with many clubs and many sports sectors across the UK to bring crowdfunding to grass roots sports – creating more sustainable financial futures alongside bringing a wider awareness and raising participation levels across the country.”

Clubs and cricket-lovers are being encouraged to sign up to the campaign. Register your interest today:
