CrowdFunder Baba Brinkman Launches Rap Video Series

Launch to be held at Prince Charles Cinema, Leicester Sq on Wednesday 25th May @ 8pm Our leading crowdfunder project so far (in terms of money raised) is Baba Brinkman – the award-winning Canadian-born performer. He’s launching his campaign, supported by the Wellcome Trust and partially crowdfunded via crowdfunder.co.uk, to aide the teaching of evolution in schools and is inviting you to join him. Using his acclaimed show The Rap Guide to Evolution and a resource-packed website to assist. The site, rapguidetoevolution.co.uk hosts a series of specially produced music videos based on the show, as well as supporting materials that will assist teachers in utilising the videos in their work. The launch at The Prince Charles Cinema in London on the 25th May 2011 will include previews of the videos, as well as performances by Baba and an introduction to the thinking behind the project. Charles Darwin’s great-great-grandson, Randal Keynes, who has written a biography of Darwin will be the opening speaker at the event. Baba’s aim is simple in principle but bold in practice – to combine the wit, poetry and charisma of an accomplished rapper with the accuracy, knowledge and expertise of an evolutionary scientist. Having performed The Rap Guide to Evolution at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2009, Baba was awarded a Scotsman Fringe First Award for Best New Theatre Writing as he combined original raps with remixes of well-known tracks – chronicling Natural Selection, Sexual Selection and Evolutionary Psychology. The Rap Guide to Evolution has been split up into 12 parts, enlisting leading talent to produce and direct the videos with each video addressing a different area of the science behind evolution. On the launch of the videos, Baba said: “The response to the show so far has been overwhelming, but these videos really take it to the next level. I hope educators all over the world find them helpful in overcoming the indifference and hostility that often impede the teaching of evolution, and science in general. Hip-hop music is all about rebellion, and no one’s ideas are more revolutionary than Charles Darwin’s.” If you’re in London and especially if you supported this project, take a wonder down to the Prince Charles Cinema, Leicester Square and see this crowdfunded pitch take to the stage.
