Contained Freedom is an amazing five months art project working with women in refuges based in the South West. Catherine Cartwright is an artist with 14 years worth of experience working on community projects.
Catherine turned to Crowdfunder to help her raise £1,300 for her latest project Contained Freedom. Catherine reached her target in a matter of days thanks to her strong support network. This money will now go towards the £3,500 she was awarded through the Arts Council.
The money raised will go towards a five month project. Catherine will run weekly creative art sessions at a women’s refuge run by SAFE (Stop Abuse for Everyone) in Devon and work with them to create their own artwork for an exhibition and to hang in the refuge.
Catherine says: ‘You can’t have a picnic in the rain’ – when your life is risk there is no space to be creative. For the first time in many years this will be their first opportunity to open up creatively. Through many years’ of working with vulnerable or anxious adults I have the experience to create a safe and friendly environment for the women and children to explore drawing, printmaking, painting, textile-art and mixed-media art. They will also apply their art and newly-learnt skills, screen printing onto t-shirts and tea-towels and making their own hand-made journals.’
Once again the Arts Council money has made a huge difference to this project and allowed Catherine the opportunity to do something incredible for a number of women in the South West.
