Last year my dad was diagnosed with leukaemia. He spent a few weeks in the town hospital at Paprikovac (Banja Luka, Bosnia & Herzegovina) at the time. It was summer, the weather was lovely and he was still strong enough to go for walks outside. Rather than seeing visitors in the overcrowded rooms (12 patients in the room at one point), he preferred going outside. For those of you who don't know, Paprikovac is on the top of a hill, with great views over the town. Unfortunately, there is nowhere one can sit down and enjoy the views and sunny weather, get some fresh air, feel the sun on the skin or just escape the misery of gloomy walls inside.
My aim is to raise funds to have some benches and tables built and plant some trees for the patients and visitors to enjoy. It won't cure anyone but it might help make those difficult times a bit easier, bit more pleasant, bit more managable.
It is too late for my dad. He will not get to enjoy those benches and those views. But someone else's dad or mum or sister or a friend will.
I hope my dad will enjoy the views over those benches from wherever he is now.
I will be running Banja Luka Half Marathon on 8 May 2016. Please sponsor me. Give generously. It means a lot. Thank you.
Dad, this is for you!
