What will we use the extra money for? Here at Baked we have a meeting space at the back of the shop for local groups to use free of charge. Our plan is to refurbish this space during the latter part of 2014 with any overfunding going towards this.

Baked logo

Baked: cake with a cause is a soon-to-open cake café in Rowlands Road, Worthing that supports the local community and sells locally sourced, homemade baked goods and a range of hot and cold drinks. Operating as a social enterprise, Baked strives to enhance the fabric of community life in four ways:

  • providing young people with employment, training and skills development opportunities
  • providing a safe environment for people to meet, eat and socialise
  • supporting local community groups and charities (e.g. free use of meeting rooms, catering services)
  • championing local businesses

A Community Interest Company (limited by guarantee) 100% of our profits are reinvested into our social mission, so when Baked profits, Worthing profits.

How did Baked come about?

Lauren

Baked began life in 2013 when, after finishing my doctoral research and returning to my hometown of Worthing, I was trying to work out what to do next. Through my research career I had gained a wealth of skills and experience totally suitable for a job outside academia, I had done some interesting research on the power that big business has to dominate politics and I had been lucky enough to work and engage with students.

Back home, and looking for the next opportunity, I knew there had to be a way to combine all these strands. Doing something I loved (baking), working and mentoring young people, and doing business a little bit differently, in a way that was hands-on and would make the world (just even a little bit) better.

Baked was born.

Why are we Crowdfunding?

We are Crowdfunding to secure the final piece of our financial puzzle - to raise the final £2500 needed to complete #thefitout.

We have been overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm of our local community, whether it be people popping in to say hi during #thefitout; donations of time and resources; positive comments on our blog and social media channels; or the sheer volume of applications we had for our first round of recruitment. We want to harness this support and really bring the community on-board, working together to create positive social change in Worthing and doing things a little bit differently.
