Supporting families living with autism and providing activities such as pet therapy for children with autism spectrum disorder
About the project
My aim is to provide a recreational activity group during school holidays to support families living with autism. One of the activities I would love to provide would be pet therapy, which can benefit ASD children in many ways, helping them to focus, build confidence and improve social interaction, not to mention the huge calming effect that animals have. The group would also provide support and encouragement for parents and carers. The group will be run during School holidays, when it can be a struggle to keep any child busy, but in particular ASD children who need extra stimulation and care. It is also important for parents not to become isolated during breaks from school, as it can be difficult to find regular activities and groups that ASD children can take part in.
The Photograph is of my son meeting a therapy dog, we were able to have a trial session during the half-term holiday which was very successful, lots of children benefitted from meeting the dogs.
However, the venue is completely bare, and doesn't feel like a fun place to be at the moment.
The money donated will be used to pay for hire of the venue, and also to purchase some sensory toys and hopefully we can create a soft relaxation area for the children and a small play area, and some refreshment facilities so that we can create an area for parents to sit and relax too.
Once up and running, parents will be charged a very small fee for attending the group, which will then go towards future hire of the hall. So that this is something that can keep going. I just need some help getting started.
Thank you so much
Here are a few images of the type of thing I hope to create, a fun, relaxing area. And also provide some sensory and educational toys and books.
