Altrincham Santa Festival brings a festive spirit to the local community in Altrincham town centre on Saturday 5th Dec 2015.
A unique Santa Festival that brings the people of Altrincham together, celebrates the diverse community, provides entertainment for all the family and encourages local spend in the town centre in the run up to Christmas. The event is being organised by the team which has successfully organised the Altrincham French Festival for the last 3 years. The community group was established in 2013 to promote greater cultural activity in Altrincham.
The event will be held on Saturday 5th December closely linked to the European celebration of St Nicholas Day – 5th December, the inspiration behind the modern day Santa Claus.
St. Nicholas Day is a popular occasion for children in many parts of Europe because children usually receive gifts on this day. Some European cities such as Bari, Italy recognize St. Nicholas as the patron saint and celebrate with different activities such as gift-giving, parades, feasts and festivals.
Altrincham town centre has, like many market towns in the UK, suffered in a period of economic decline. Over the past 2 years considerable effort has been put in by Trafford Council and a number of community-based organisations to help regenerate the town centre. This unique project aims to build on this work and hopefully establish itself as an annual family Xmas event.
We would like the Santa Festival to be held in a number of locations across the town centre creating a fun festival atmosphere for one day. During the day the main activities will take place in the Stamford Quarter and George Street where there will be a variety of entertainment including a "Santa team competition", carol singers/bell ringers, loads of children's activities; and local musicians and performers showcasing their talents. One of the highlights of the festival will be a 'Santa Claus’s Winter Wonderland experience ‘created in Kings Court, Altrincham where children can meet Santa Claus in his workshop. There will also be a Santa themed party with live entertainment and food/drink in the evening.
To add to the festive atmosphere local retailers will be taking part in a best dressed Xmas tree competition. The event will also be fund raising for Marie Curie, our adopted charity of the year.
What we'll be doing:
- Santa themed team competition- Live music and performances by local musicians and dance groups- Festive treasure hunt in town centre- Retailers and hospitality businesses best dressed Xmas tree competition- Santa's Grotto- Festive food and drink stalls- Children's arts & craft activities- Santa’s Candle light parade- Winter Wonderland Experience in Kings Court (ticket entry only)- Santa Party in Kings Court ( ticket entry only)- Xmas raffle in aide of Marie Curie
Why it's a great idea:
As well as providing fun activities for town centre visitors and encouraging a greater sense of community spirit, it will we believe
- Increase footfall by encouraging residents to shop locally in Altrincham town centre and boost the local economy.- Provide a platform for local community groups and charities to engage with the wider community.- Encourage town centre businesses to work together on events and joint marketing initiatives.
How we'll get it done:
Working together with local businesses and community organisations.Engaging retailers and the Business Community through meetings.Creating an Altrincham Xmas Community Events Working Group.Supported by/in collaboration with Altrincham Forward, Stamford Quarter Management and BITC Healthy High Street Champions. The event is being led by Zainul Sachak, the Founder of the Altrincham French Festival, supported by a team of local residents who are passionate about making a difference in their local community.
We have already secured some funding towards the running of this family event.
But we need at least another £3000 to cover costs of artists' fees, PA equipment and decorations to make this project sizzle and it would be wonderful if we, the local community, could play our part in bringing this festival to our fantastic town!
Lots of local people and businesses have expressed their desire to get involved in this project. Your donation will be vital in bringing this project to life and, as an added bonus, we've put together some incentives for donors that we hope will entice you to give generously. Please do also tell your friends and neighbours about this project so that we can involve as many local people as possible and spread the good news.
