Breakin' KCL … Who Are We?
Breakin' KCL is a non profit university society that has been heavily involved in developing the breaking (correct term for 'break dance!') scene in the UK for the past 14 years. We provide a safe place for breakers to train and regularly have bboys and bgirls from all over the UK travelling to train where we are based at London Bridge.
A community in which beginners are able to train with the best crews has been created by us and in doing so the importance of sharing knowledge and a sense of togetherness has been promoted.
Using our position within the community we provide access to affordable workshops taught by big names and 'OGs' from around the world providing dancers with vital knowledge and experience. We also, as a university society, promote this knowledge of the dance and Hip hop culture to the university community who otherwise have little exposure to this.
The Elements Festival
What is it?
The aim of this festival is to celebrate the five elements of Hip hop culture (Graffiti, DJing, MCing, Bboying, Knowledge) to educate and entertain the local community and beyond about the true culture of Hip hop, not what is portrayed by a lot of media. In doing so we want to use this opportunity to celebrate local talents and communities. This will be a very interactive event, below you can see our plans so far for showcasing the elements.
We bring you a graffiti wall on which you can practice your own graffiti under the guidance of experts who will also be demonstrating their own talents and explaining what they do. Bring along your old clothes to be graffiti-ed on! There will be also be a talk, an insight into the history and development of the art form as well as a Henna artist on site who will apply a Hiphop twist to what she does! There is the possibility of a live sketch artist as well!
We bring you music from the culture all day with the renowned DJ Billy Bizznizz headlining this section! Furthermore we have teamed up with KCL Dj Society and they will be available with their equipment to show and teach you the basic techniques so you can try yourself!
A ten piece funk band, Treehouse of Funk, will be performing for an hour! There are many other possibilities for this section of the festival, for example a Hip hop violin piece.
Several UK MCs and rappers will be performing during the day and we are looking to get a headline act for the festival, soon to be announced!
Spoken word poetry from Tory Town Poets and Beatboxers will be showcasing their talents during the day as well!
This is what Breakin' KCL do best! There will be areas for dancers to get down and possibly a 'Seven to Smoke' battle will take place. Also our Hip hop teacher will be teaching fun social dances for three hours. (not all at once!)
Other possibilities include a performance from the House of Kings popping crew which formed through our society and a collaboration with KCL Dance Society to put on a Breaking+Ballet piece!
and...lots and lots of food!
Other areas we are working on include:
MuseumAs you walk though the event there will be exhibitions and information boards similar to a museum highlighting the influences in hip hop culture, the elements and biographies of defining personalities as well as 'Hip hop artefacts.'
CharitiesThere are a number of charities within the university that work very closely with the local communities and we want to get them involved to promote the work they do.
This event will be held in Guys Campus Memorial Gardens. This venue has been confirmed and is perfect for our event. It is a picturesque garden hidden away from the streets of London Bridge yet next to the Shard and London Bridge Station- easily accessible and perfectly laid out.It is private land owned by the university and provides us with most of the facilities we would need for an event like this (toilets, water, electricity). Its location is also perfect for maximum engagement as it has a large student community living in the area. Attractions such as Borough Market, The Shard , Tower Bridge are close by and the area is filled with tourists all the time. The venue is often used for barbeques and out door performances and food markets.
The power, energy and creativity of students can be remarkable when they put their mind to things.
We have a passionate team involved in this event. All have been involved in organising events, some similar to this one. We came together due to our passion for Hip hop culture and our dedication to our society holding a successful community event. Breakin' KCL have been hosting larger and larger events over the last few years and we all agreed that it was time to provide something massive.
We have a design team responsible for branding, promotion, design, and marketing of the festival and surrounding activities. We have a finance and legal team responsible for budgeting, contacts, and sourcing. We have a performance team responsible for coordinating acts, scheduling and content. All work closely together with regular meetings and have not restricted our activities to what is outlined above.
We have secured some funding though KCLSU’s community fund, and are carrying out other activities as a society to raise more.
Remember, the size of this festival depends on YOU! The more we receive, the more we will do!
We are looking forward to seeing you at the festival!
