Mural and facelift at The SouthBank Club, Bristol
In October The SouthBank Club in Bristol will be celebrating 7 years as an independent arts, music, dance and community venue. We think it deserves a facelift and are planning a large scale (10m high) mural, a garden make-over, water feature and a hand-painted sign to take the project into the next 7 years.
The SouthBank Club is an exciting and successful, friendly and eclectic project 10 minutes walk from the city centre just south of the river in Bristol. It’s an arts bar, music venue, social club, meeting place and melting pot for creatives, dancers, poets and their friends and just about anyone else who enjoys good music, dance, good beers and local ciders in a friendly smoke-free atmosphere.
Housed in a handsome Victorian church style building the venue comprises main event space, dance studio, cine-projection space, multi-purpose gallery and meeting room plus two bars and garden. There is a regular and varied programme of dance classes, music nights, fashion shows, theatre, festival events, family days which attracts both a local and international audience. It’s highly valued in the community because it’s friendly, a bit off-beat and is a great social hub.
The building which was in a poor state of repair when purchased in 2007 has been subject to extensive renovation and refurbishment including new roof, windows , floors, façade, bar and installation of sound and Pa system, theatre style lighting (all mainly with the help of enthusiastic volunteers and almost no-public funding). We think it’s a good example of a project that can get things done and offer a professional service with little money but lots of enthusiasm.
SouthBank will be seven years old in October and we think it deserves a facelift to celebrate and take the project forward for another seven years. So over the summer/early autumn we’re planning:
- A massive 10m x 8m unique mural to adorn the end wall by local artist, writer and adventurer Robert Fannin showcasing the activities, style and feel of the club.
- A new painted sign to replace the poor old banner which has served us well for six years.
- To landscape our pretty secluded garden with some handsome trellis, planting and a water feature to make it more family friendly.
- Fix the gable end roof before the winter which has been leaking for four years.
Well we don’t need lots of money but we do need some money so this is where you come in. We’re aiming to raise five thousand pounds in 30 days to cover the cost of scaffold, wall and roof repairs, mural design and execution, the cost of paint and materials for the garden.
If you want to contribute to the future of a much valued community project please read on - we hope to start the work in August. There are lots of great rewards both for small and larger donors and all donors will be invited to the inaugural opening (you might even get worked into the design).
All donors will receive a SouthBank membership card giving reward points at the bar, will be mentioned in a list of donors on our website and will be invited to our 7th anniversary party and inauguration of the new mural on 11 Oct 2014.
