A bit about me.....
My name is Alex Waterhouse, I’m 17. I started climbing when I was 11 and immediately fell in love with the sport. Since 2012 I’ve been a member of the GB Junior Climbing Team and compete in both Lead and Boulder disciplines. Most people who know me will say I’m competitive; I love to train, I love to compete and I want to win.
This year I have been selected to compete in the World Youth Championships in September, in New Caledonia, and two European Bouldering Cups in France and Austria.
Why am I fundraising?
New Caledonia is, quite literally, half a world away, and the cost of the trip is expected to be around £3000 for the flights, accommodation and expenses. With the cost of the two European Bouldering Cups added in, the total bill for this years foreign competitions will be something over £4000. I am a completely self funded athlete and this year will unfortunately have a shortfall of about £3000……:(
How else do I raise funds?
I raise funds by making and selling a range of funky “TinyClimb” chalk bags through local climbing walls and eBay. The proceeds from these, together with support from my family, cover the costs of training, kit, and domestic competitions and part of the foreign competitions. With regular trips to Sheffield and Edinburgh for team training and competitions, these expenses soon mount up!
What support do I get?
My family give me a tremendous amount of support, physical, financial and emotional, especially my dad, who drives me all around the country to train and compete, belays me, spots me, celebrates with me when things go well and picks me up when they don’t.
The Barn, The Quay, and High Sports, the walls I train at, also give me free entry, so I can train as much as I can without having to worry about the cost, and The University of St.Mark and St.John in Plymouth give me strength and conditioning sessions and training advice to ensure that I am looking after my body!

What would this mean to me?
Having the chance to test myself against the best in the world is what I train for. I really want to see if I can match and beat the best there is. With your help I can get there, and who knows how I will do. The best case is, I win, the worst case, I do badly.
Whatever the outcome, I will have given my all, and will come back ready to carry on training and improving, ready to try again.
Every one who donates £10 or more will get a personal postcard from New Caledonia to say thank you and I've had some great support, from loads of people, so there are rewards for climbers and some that will allow non climbers the chance to try out a great sport.
Thank you for all your support,.
