Financial Appeal for Brightland School's Sport Facilities
Founded 25 years ago, the amazing Brightland Dicovery School in Kerala is currently building new classrooms to take on extra children. This appeal is to raise funds for the sports facilities of this fantastic school to encourage students of all ages and sexes to participate.
In January 2013 my wife Lucy and I taught for three months at Brightland Discovery school, set up by the dynamic and visionary educationalist Usha Venkatesh. Her aim is to bring warmth and love to the notoriously disciplinarian Indian education. The school has gone from strength to strength and a new building is being built to increase the numbers at the school.
Whilst teaching at the school my passion for sport meant that I played football and cricket with the kids and refereed and umpired their games to introduce some structure. At the same time I encouraged the girls to get involved. Most had never played before and I unearthed some fantastic talent. The rest of the school really got excited about supporting these matches and they brought the whole school together.
I am raising funds so that we can create a proper Multi Use Games Area where the kids can play football, basketball, and especially cricket, India's favourite sport. With the money raised we will surface the existing playing area, erect goals at either end, basketball hoops across the width and layout markings for cricket. We will raise nets to prevent balls disappearing into neighbouring properties - the loss of a football is a devastating thing in India! By increasing the facilities of the school we will encourage the kids (especially the girls) to experience different sports and foster a culture of health and fitness for everybody at the school.
To help achieve the target, I am participating in the Sports Relief 5km (200 lengths) Swimathon on 22nd March and undertaking a three hour Yogathon.
Please help me raise funds for this amazing school and make this vision a reality
