4Elementz is a community project which aims to create work placements in creative media for unemployed people in Cornwall

New stretch target

Thank you for your amazing support!

Our Stretch Target is £10,000

If we are able to stretch our funding this will allow us to raise the money for another camera £2600 and more equipment such as a Scanner £80, Tripods £300, LED video lighting £500, Backgrounds for filming £200, Fish eye lens £800, a flask gun £450. This will allow the students to improve their quality of videography and photography projects and build their portfolios with work they can use to gain employment after their placements.

4Elementz CIC is a Community project based between Camborne and Redruth in Cornwall. We aim to help local unemployed people gain work experience media and mentor them into employment and/or education.

The Project

How it started

When I started the 4Elementz in 2012, in my own time and with my own resources, I began by working with number of local young rappers. I produced their promotional photography and music videos and encouraged them to think about how they could use their talents and interests to build a career. I observed that their confidence grew and my work with them led them on to achieving things they never thought possible, such as being offered paid booking for gigs and festivals. I found that giving these bright young people something to focus on not only reduced their risk of offending but also gave them a positive life focus. For example, one of the first young men I worked with has now opened his own online shop selling hiphop clothing, including the 4elementz clothing range. By early 2014 I managed to establish 4Elementz as a Community Interest Company and got financial back from the lottery and local job centre so I could run work experience programmes in Media.

The work placements

As a photographer and videographer I have my own studio at Heartlands just outside of Camborne. Which offers the perfect place to run the work placements from. Coupled with my work skills working with unemployed people from a range of backgrounds with my experience as a successful photography/videographer entrepreneur I am well equipped to run this project and have great outcomes for the beneficiaries. The 4Elementz work placements are open to local people who are unemployed or in low paid employment who wish gain a career in Media. This covers music, photography, videography, social media marketing, PR, events management and digital design. They are usually referred by the Job centre but people can self refer. The placement length ranges, but generally its a 8 week work experience programme where they work in my studio. As part of the programme I also work with each student on their job hunting, CV, application forms and help them gain employment or sign post them on to courses in the local college. I also have two apprenticeship programmes running at a time which is linked in with Truro College and their Creative and digital Media Apprenticeship. A number of beneficiaries are local young music artists that I work with on a drop in basis  though out the year to advance their careers in music by working with them to give them free promotional photography and music videos. This part of the project is what 4Elementz is renowned for within the local community. One of the artists we have been working with has now gone on to perform at festivals internationally. We want other people to follow in his footsteps!

Who am I?

I'm Kelly Thorne the founder of 4Elementz CIC. I started the project in 2012 after winning a Devon and Cornwall Probation Trust award for my rap therapy work with offenders in prison, while working as a local Probation Officer. I left the Probation service when I registered 4Elementz as a Community Interest Company, which is not for profit. After years of working with unemployed offenders I had observed the difficulties of many young men, who found it very difficult to gain meaningful employment that they could earn a good living from and have a bright future in. It is so hard for young people with low confidence to get motivated to work in low paying jobs with no prospects. This area in Cornwall also puts unemployed people at a huge disadvantage due to the high cost of living, limited affordable transport and a lack of industry. I want to offer opportunities for young people and the long term unemployed. I want them to be inspired and motivated to apply themselves creatively so that they can turn their interest in music and media into an exciting career.

Why am I crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding will enable us to raise money for extra placements. We need more IMAC computer stations and photography equipment for the students to work on. The more we raise the more placements we can run. We would love to give as many people we can a helping hand into a positive and rewarding career that will benefit them, their families and the wider community.

The break down of the cost I am aiming to cover here are;

Three refurbished IMAC's £800 each (so I can offer three extra students placements on the rolling 8 week work programme)

One Canon 5d Mark iii £2600 each (for all the students to use and share)

If we are able to gain any stretch funding we would like to cover another camera at £2600 and other photography and videography equipment.

What they are saying...

'After several years of being unemployment I had almost given up on myself but after I completed the 4elementz 8 week work placement I was offered an apprenticeship with 4Elementz and Truro College. My confidence and communication skills have grown and I feel I have matured and can now be a better role model for my son thanks to the project for giving me the chance I needed.'  - Dale Lynn (21 years old, Redruth)

'Since I studied media in college I have have wanted to be a photographer. But after college I struggle any job, let alone anything related to photography. I was unemployed for nearly a year. It was difficult because I didn't have any work experience or my own transport. But then the job centre referred me to the 4elementz work programme which I did for 8 weeks. While I was on the placement I was sponsored to stay their and do a apprenticeship in Creative media. I never thought I'd be able to get a job in something I enjoyed. I am really enjoying building my photography portfolio and am hoping to be a self employed photographer one day.' -Nathan Trease (21 years old, Camborne).
