We want to give our disabled athletes the chance to experience an Olympic-style Opening Ceremony at their National Games just like their non-disabled peers.  To make their defining moment special.  To make them feel celebrated just like everyone else.  To be the launch pad into happier, healthier lives, which they enter post-Games with a new confidence, new friends and a new reason for being.  The kick start to a more even playing field in life.

Special Olympics GB uses sport to transform the lives of 10,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) so that they can have opportunities for better physical and mental health, improved confidence, new friendships and inclusion in their communities.

Children and adults with intellectual disabilites are disadvantaged as they find it harder than others to learn, understand and communicate, often leading their lives without ever realising their own potential. Children with an intellectual disability are socially excluded and 8 out of 10 are bullied. 1 in 2 families with an intellectually disabled child live in poverty. 1 in 3 people with an intellectual disability are obese and have a shockingly lower life expectancy just becaue they're intellectually disabled.

We use sport to transform their lives.

Our National Summer Games is held every 4 years and represents a huge platform to showcase the abilities of disabled children and adults. In August 2017, the 10th Special Olympics GB National Summer Games will take place in the City of Sheffield for 2,600 disabled athletes from across the country with 19 sports to include athletics, aquatics (swimming), badminton, basketball, boccia, bowls, cycling, equestrian, football (5 a-side), golf, gymnastics (artistic & rhythmic), judo, netball, powerlifting, sailing, table tennis, tennis and ten-pin bowling.
