New stretch target

The initial £50,000 will cover accommodaton for 400 overseas participants at the MARWT Village at Bradford university. However, we also need funding to meet local transporation costs for the teams to and from the games at Bradford and Bingley Rugby Club, hospitality and subsistence.

Project aim

To secure funding for accomodation and hospitality at Bradford University for the four hundred disabled and able bodied participants of the first ever Mixed Ability Rugby World Tournament (MARWT).

About the project

RUGBY FOR ALL - Players with & without Learning & Physical Disabilities in all teams. 400 Players 10 Countries 5 days 1 Host City, Bradford.

The Tournament organisers are International Mixed Ability Sports (IMAS) working with the Bumble Bees RUFC, Englands 1st Mixed Ability Rugby Team. The squad evolved as the result of one young man’s determination to play full contact rugby despite his Cerebral Palsy and Learning Disabilities.

In 2009 Anthony Brooke a student of the Workers Educational Association (WEA) worked with his Tutor to overcome his rejection from his local rugby club and contacted the RFU Development Office.

Able- bodied players soon joined to offer experience, advice and to facilitate a faster more exciting game of full contact rugby. The team still attracts players of all levels including those who had previously 'hung up their boots'!

Mixed Ability is an innovative concept which allows players with Learning or Physical Disabilities and non disabled players to play together in the same full contact XV a side game. In 2014 IMAS co-ordinated the first international gathering of European Mixed Ability Rugby clubs, interest is now global with a delegation from Argentina attending the MARWT.

Former Sport and Tourism Minister Helen Grant gave enthusiastic support  for the  IMAS led initiative and helped secure financial backing from the Department of Culture Media and Sport to improve accessibility at the Bradford and Bingley Rugby Ground.

The competition will be held from the 17th to 21st August in the lead up to the official Rugby World Cup Games in September. Over 400 players and delegates from 10 nations have already confirmed their attendance at the free event.

Yorkshire MPs were united in their support for the games following in the success of last year’s Grande depart. Longstanding Bradford MP and former Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said Raising awareness of disabilities and promoting well being through sport is something that I have always believed in and I hope will attract support from all sections of society.”
